Welcome to the Burwood Centre

The Burwood Centre has offered specialist, multidisciplinary assessments to children with hearing impairments for over eight years. Assessments are provided for any child with a hearing impairment, irrespective of their communication mode (whether they use spoken or signed language to communicate) and any other difficulties that the child may have (e.g. specific or general learning difficulties, physical difficulties etc). We see children of all ages, from 0-19 years old.

The assessment centre was set up because a real need was identified for independent multidisciplinary assessments and advice for parents of hearing impaired children. Parents often comment that they wish it was possible to get the various professionals involved with their child together and give testament to how invaluable this service is to them. Some families simply come to the centre to gain a better understanding of their child. Others wish to gain advice and independent reports to help them with difficult decisions regarding their child’s educational provision and to secure the placement that they believe is best for their child.

Although the Assessment Centre was set up using charitable monies sourced by the Mary Hare Foundation (based at Mary Hare School), the assessment centre is on a separate site, staffed by individuals who do not work in the schools and unlike Mary Hare School it does not have a specific communication philosophy. The assessment centre is completely autonomous and the assessments and reports provided are completely independent of any outside influence.
