Why do people seek assessments from the Burwood Centre?

Families come to Burwood for assessments for various reasons, but they generally have unanswered questions or concerns.

Understanding your child's difficulties
Sometimes these are about their understanding of exactly what their child's difficulties are.  For example, whether their child is just deaf or has an additional difficulty such as a speech and language disorder, specific or general learning difficulty or autistic spectrum disorder.

Hearing loss
Other families of younger children might seek confirmation of the level of their child's hearing loss and want information on what this might mean now and in the future.

Educational advice
Sometimes families come to us when they want specific advice on the type of support that their child needs to succeed within school.  These families may be in the process of trying to change their child's school placement and may need a report as evidence for their special educational needs tribunal.

Reasons families have given include wanting:

  • "an independent view of where my child is at and what she needs to move on"

  • "an independent assessment to identify my child's current abilities and needs, to help us with our tribunal over his secondary school placement"

  • "an assessment to tell me whether my child has a specific language impairment as well as hearing impairment"

  • "to find out  whether my child is just deaf or if he has any additional difficulties"

  • "to find out if my child is recieiving the right support in school and if her hearing aids are appropriate"
