What happens on a typical assessment day?
When a family arrives at the Burwood Centre they are given a little time to settle into our family room, which is equipped with kitchen facilities and plenty of toys.
The clinicians then meet with the parents to make sure that they understand the aims of the day and are provided with all the relevant background information. The child is then assessed by each clinician in turn.
Parents are encouraged to observe the assessments and, depending upon the child, be as involved as is appropriate. Assessments are geared to the child's developmental stage, so a younger child may just believe that he, or she, is playing.
Feedback is given as the day progresses and there is plenty of time for the parents to discuss their concerns with our multidisciplinary team. The length of the day varies from child to child, but typically a family might be at the Centre from 9.30am - 3.30pm.
